What is Hemophilia?

Hemophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder that prevents blood from clotting properly. While historically labeled a "male disease," women are significantly impacted and face unique diagnosis and treatment challenges.

Understanding the Condition

Hemophilia occurs when the body lacks sufficient clotting factors—proteins in the blood that help control bleeding. Without these, even minor injuries can cause prolonged bleeding, and internal hemorrhaging can occur spontaneously.

The condition is typically inherited through the X chromosome. While males with hemophilia often show severe symptoms, females have traditionally been dismissed as mere "carriers," leading to widespread medical neglect.

The "carrier" label has resulted in millions of women being dismissed and underdiagnosed. Free Bleeders exists to dismantle this narrative and ensure every woman receives expert care.

Signs & Symptoms

Recognizing these symptoms is the critical first step toward an accurate diagnosis.

Easy Bruising

Large, unexplained bruises that take a long time to heal or occur without clear trauma.

Heavy Periods

Severe menstrual bleeding (Menorrhagia) often requiring frequent pad/tampon changes every hour.

Prolonged Bleeding

Wounds, minor cuts, or nosebleeds that do not stop bleeding within the expected timeframe.

Dental Complications

Excessive bleeding after dental extractions or minor surgical procedures.

Joint Pain

Pain, stiffness, or swelling in joints (knees, elbows, ankles) caused by internal bleeding.

Post-Op Bleeding

Unusual hemorrhaging after childbirth or routine surgeries that were previously unexplained.

Women & Hemophilia: Breaking the Myth

For decades, hemophilia was considered a "male-only" disease. This dangerous misconception has led to generations of women suffering without proper care. The truth is undeniable:

0 Million women in the U.S. with undiagnosed bleeding disorders
0 Average years it takes for a woman to be correctly diagnosed
0 Percent of "carriers" who experience significant bleeding symptoms

Watch the "Because She Matters" Spotlight

Through this partnership, Nova Nordisk and Free Bleeders aim to reframe the narrative—fostering a community of resilience, understanding, and expert care. Because she matters, her diagnosis cannot wait.
